The John W. Brockman Fellowship
For Speech / Language Pathology
Created in 1982 by the Freemasons of the Maryland Scottish Rite, this Fellowship Program grants awards through the Maryland Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”). These Fellowships encourage outstanding individuals to pursue a career in Speech/Language Pathology.
I.
AWARD: These fellowships are awarded to graduate students who have completed the first year of their graduate program at a Maryland University leading to a Master’s Degree in Speech/Language Pathology. The award, credited to the fellow’s university financial account, is up to $5,000. One half of the award will be credited each of the fellow’s final two semesters. Additionally, a bonus of $500 will be made to fellows who obtain employment in Maryland as a Speech/Language Pathologist and successfully complete a Clinical Fellowship Year according to ASHA requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence within two years of receiving th degree.
II.
INITIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Students at Maryland Universities may apply for this fellowship if they:
a.
have completed their first year of graduate study in a Speech/Language Pathology Program and
b.
have had supervised clinical experience.
III.
CONTINUING REQUIREMENTS: To continue as a Scottish Rite Fellow, the students must maintain a grade average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
IV.
APPLICATIONS: Applicants are nominated by their university, and the fellows are selected solely by the Foundation.To be considered for a Scottish Rite Fellowship, applicants must:
a.
complete an application for the John W. Brockman Fellowship,
b.
give permission to their university to release and forward their certified undergraduate and graduate academic records,
c.
be recommended by their department chairperson and
d.
meet with the Fellowship Committee of the Foundation.
V.
TUITION PAYMENT: Each of the fellow’s final two semesters, the Foundation will credit one half of the award amount to each fellow’s account at their university. Alternative arrangements are possible, if mutually agreed upon by the Foundation and the university.
VI.
BONUS: Scottish Rite Fellows will receive a bonus payment of $500 when they:
a.
complete their Master’s Degree in Speech/Language Pathology with a 3.0 grade point average and
b.
complete a Clinical Fellowship Year in Maryland leading to ASHA Certification, within two years of completing their degree.
VII.
ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS: The Foundation may, at its discretion, waive any of the requirements of the Fellowship. A fellow who fails or withdrawals from a course is expected to return all payments to the Foundation for that course. The Foundation does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, disability, color or national origin.
VIII.
WHERE TO APPLY: Applications must be filed with the Office of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the applicant’s university by April 1st. Fellows will be selected by June 1st. For more information contact:
